Populated Information Terrains: Virtual Environments for Sharing Data
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper is a follow up to previous working papers on Populated Information Terrains. It contains more analysis and also some details of early prototyping activities. The concept of Populated Information Terrains (PITS) aims to combine ideas from Virtual Reality (VR) and Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) to extend traditional database technology. PITS are virtual data spaces which support visualisation of, and cooperative work within, shared data. This paper identifies key techniques for building PITS for various types of database, including multi-dimensional visualisation, statistical approaches, graph drawing techniques and human centred approaches. We then discuss issues concerned with populating such terrains including communication between users, embodiment of users, peripheral awareness of others and its relation to database concurrency control. Finally, we describe a prototype implementation that demonstrates the concept of PITS and which helps clarifies key design issues for future full-scale implementations. متن کاملPopulated information terrains: supporting the cooperative browsing of on-line information
The growth of network availability has led to a dramatic increase in the amount of on-line information users can access remotely. However, users often have difficulty locating the details they require due to the manner in which this information is provided. One reason for this difficulty is that limited facilities are provided which allow users to exploit their existing spatial skills in managi...
متن کاملReal-Time Streaming and Rendering of Terrains
Terrains and other geometric models have been traditionally stored locally. Their remote access presents the characteristics that are a combination of file serving and realtime streaming like audio-visual media. This paper presents a terrain streaming system based upon a client server architecture to handle heterogeneous clients over low-bandwidth networks. We present an efficient representatio...
متن کاملAuthorization models for secure information sharing: a survey and research agenda
This article presents a survey of authorization models and considers their 'fitness-for-purpose' in facilitating information sharing. Network-supported information sharing is an important technical capability that underpins collaboration in support of dynamic and unpredictable activities such as emergency response, national security, infrastructure protection, supply chain integration and emerg...
متن کاملAn Incentive-Aware Lightweight Secure Data Sharing Scheme for D2D Communication in 5G Cellular Networks
Due to the explosion of smart devices, data traffic over cellular networks has seen an exponential rise in recent years. This increase in mobile data traffic has caused an immediate need for offloading traffic from operators. Device-to-Device(D2D) communication is a promising solution to boost the capacity of cellular networks and alleviate the heavy burden on backhaul links. However, dir...
